    data plan

I am currently with a carrier that requires you to have a data plan with smartphones. Does Sprint require you to purchase a data plan? Anybody know how much they charge? I would fully intend on getting data with my Evo, but like the option of cancelling it if needed.

With the Evo you are required to not only get a Data plan, but also the $10 premium data add-on. Minimum plan cost is $79.99 that they will allow with the Evo, but that's for TRUE uncapped, unlimited data transfer. You will probably be able to cancel it at some point, but I don't know. However, they do have their unconditional 30-day guarantee, if you decide you don't like it.

I'm not excited about the plan but i am still going to get the Hotspot with it and see how useful it is. I don't live in a 4g area but i am not far from one.

For me the data plan is a deal breaker. I already have an HTC hero. When I travel I use my laptop. Hotels either have wired/wireless internet. I can hook up my phone to my notebook if internet is not available. Sounds like $10/month for the privelidge of owning an EVO and then another $30/month for a capability I already have. Nice screen but my iPad blows it away!

Evo with hot spot might make sense for someone who can get 4G. Can then cancel their regular home internet.

Definitely not cheap, for me the data plan is worth the extra cost. I can see where it would be a deal breaker for some, especially if you travel with your laptop.

i have actually been trying to get a clear answer from Sprint as to why i would be paying an additional $10 a month for a "Premium Data Add On" when i already have unlimited data on my $69.99 plan. they should call it what it is, a 4G fee, or like someone else said, the fee for the privilege of owning the EVO. it is a deal breaker for me. i just can't justify paying $120 a year for something that is not even available to me(4G service).
the only response i get from sprint is that the phone is great, service is great, and they have to charge more for service because of the enhanced capabilities of the EVO. i'm not sure, but i think my htc touch pro does everything an EVO would do when it comes to DATA, except for video chat. i can watch flash movies, download pretty much any file, look at the full internet, etc. maybe those of you with the EVO can fill me in on the benefits of the Data Add On, because sprint isn't doing a good job of selling the service, and i do want the EVO, so hopefully there are some benefits of the $10 premium data add on.

thanks in advanced for any info

I am pretty sure you can't cancel the data add-on. They use lot of it for letting you get the phone cheaper.

Yes, you are required to have a BASIC data plan along with the add-on plan for PREMIUM data..which is another $9.99/month just to be able to use the EVO. Yeah. I know they are charging out the ass these days for all these high tech phones. =\

With one of theses phones, and all the backgrounding that they tend to do, a data package is needed at the least, and a lot of people will go with and unlimited or very high data plan.
