HELP! Notifications for stock SMS will absolutely not go away.

I have added handcent to my EVO.

Even before adding this. I would always get a notification with a new SMS message from the stock message. EVERY notification setting is set off.

messages>settings>recieved notifcation (UNCHECKED) >play nofiication sound (Unchecked) >vibrate (Unchecked)

no matter what...I still get every notification when I get a new sms depending on if my phone is on vibrate or on ring. Only when on silent do I not get one.

Brought phone to Sprint store, the worker told me remove the SMS icon from home page. Did that...Still get dual notifications. This is very very annoying.

Anyone have this problem or a fix for it?

    Greatly appreciated.

    Hoya,
It looks like you've tried almost everything. One more thing to try is to go to Settings - Applications - All - Messages
and scroll down to the bottom and hit the "clear defaults" button.
If all else fails and you're still having the problem, here's what I would do:
    -uninstall Handcent SMS
-go into message settings and turn ON all of those notifications
-send yourself an SMS (you can do this via gmail if you don't have another phone lying around)
-note whether you receive the notification (you should)
    -reboot the phone
-go back into Messaging settings and turn OFF those notifications (in mine, "Play Notification sound" and "Vibrate" are both checked but greyed out because Received notification is unchecked)
-follow the Clear Defaults instructions above
-send yourself another SMS message, noting whether you receive the notification.
-go ahead and reinstall Handcent SMS
-send a message to someone, being sure to select the "Use this application" checkbox and selecting handcent
-Then send yourself another test SMS.

I know it seems like a long, drawn out process but hopefully it'll get rid of that annoying double notification.
If the above process doesn't work, let us know. Also, include any information about what other software you're using. Have you experimented with other SMS software in the past that maybe you've forgotten to remove?

Ok..im a bit confused or somethign is wrong with my phone.

In your original instructions you say to go to Settings - Application - All - Messages to get to the "clear defaults" button.

The clear defaults is actually greyed out for me and says "No defaults set" .

I cant stop notification for anything :-(

Not only the double..even when I take handcent off...and just kill notifications for the stock messaging...it still vibrates n notifies me when I get a message.

    this is absurd.

Have you ever installed ChompSMS or any other messaging client besides Handcent?

I believe I may have installed chomp then got rid of it for Handcent.

    Would/could that be causing issues?

If there's no defaults set for the built-in messaging app and if, when you go to settings, you've disabled notifications in the default messaging app...
...maybe you forgot to uninstall Chomp so the 2 notifications you're getting are Handcent/Chomp instead of Handcent/default?

Check to make sure that Chomp is really gone, and then take a second to go through your apps list to make sure that Handcent is the only installed messaging app.

Let me know what you find out.

Ive checked. Absolutely no other message app besides the stock.

Chomp and handcent both fully removed. As I said, I cant even get the stock notifications to cease.
Not sure what to do from here.

Thanks for your time and efforts by the way. I appreciate the help.

    Hoya, this is really strange.
Is your evo rooted? I'd like to be able to see a screenshot of this notification. If not, can you find a picture online of a popup that looks like yours?

    No sir. No root job.

Stock EVO out the box from Sprint.

the notification is not like a widget or anything....so im not sure I could even grab a screen shot.

What im saying is WHENVER a SMS comes thru through messaging, my phone vibrates or makes a chime sound (depending on volume/vibrate) and the message appears in the status bar the top of the phone and scrolls for at least the first part of whats been written to me.

I consider that a 'notification'..now unless im wrong...this is what I assume would stop when u go into messaging/settings/ and UNCLICK the "recieved notification" check button which claims to "show notification in status bar when messages are recieved"..

The last check box "Vibrate" under recieved messages is grey out..but I unchecked it anyway before unchecked the recieved notification box.

My aim is to NOT have any notification of when I get a text message..unless I look at the shortcut and it shows a number and/or I actually go into the app and see it.
