I hit the camera icon, a black screen with a white camera icon pops up briefly then disappears back to the Home screen. Tried Camcorder as well. Help.

I tried rebooting and removing the battery, but as I saw from Advanced Task Manager, when it reboots, it reloads everything that was active when you turned it off. Tried just ending camera, and some other apps I thought might affect with no avail. As a final battle cry, I smashed "End All", got sent back Home, hit Camera... problem solved.

I had same problem when I got my replacement EVO. Pulled battery for 15 minutes and that fixed the problem.

Well, now you know it can be fixed w/o a 15 min wait period Replacement EVO? You mind if I ask what happened to the first one?

    Software

From what I am seeing with others and myself there are certain programs that are affecting the camera's functions within the startup script when they run in the background. The only program I have found so far to do this is pandora. Whether there is a variable or function call named similar to the camera's script I am unaware and haven't looking into how an EVO executes code and running programs. like stated above, I would turn off all background programs and try your camera. If that works and goes out again, try turning off one at a time to narrow down what is causing the freeze up within the camer's script. Hope that helps clear up a few things, but to me it is looking more like software conflicts rather than hardware issues.

Get rid of any task managers or task killers. They do more harm than good.
HTC EVO • SOS X ROM
    B&N Nook Color • CM7 [7.03 encore] ROM
HTC EVO Shift • Synergy ROM
Samsung Galaxy Prevail • Nemesis 1.3 ROM
LG 500G • Stock (backup phone)

Amazing... I had a similar issue where one day randomly my camera seemed to add an effect similar to 'sephia', also on the camcorder... As I read your steps in trouble shooting, pretty much the same route I had already started, about to take out the battery, I was extremely surprised to see the pent-up frustrations out lashed into hitting the phone... As I was laughing, I looked at my phone and gave my camera a stern tap, and... Ta DA!!!! It goes to show mechanical agitation works when you'd never expect it...
    Thanx Instant Mustache!!!

    Factory Restore. Same problem.

So i noticed my camera not loading this weekend. I immediately thought it was the custom ROM I was using. I tried 3 different ROMs with the last one being stock and still its a no go. I'm pulling the battery now for 15 mins but don't have high hopes.

Well 15 minutes had passed, I threw the battery back in and amazingly it loaded... Wow. Did not see that coming. Thanks for the tip!
