Here's what I can tell you (all a newb knows)
I was able to do this 5-7 times. Would power down by selecting turn device off.
I watched it turn off, button lights would remain on for about 5 sec after screen shut off, then flash once. Then as fat as I can tell the device was off.
I'd hold down the power button for a fee seconds and it would come on as always, but the boot animations were very quick, then it was up and running. It mounted the SD card and everything was just as it was before shut down. I left it off varying times each time, up to about 3 minutes.
Did not keep boot when selected restart. Also stopped when I did a battery pull.
The battery pull seems to have stopped whatever was causing it to keep the root, haven't been able to reproduce since, but haven't tried yet this morning, no coffee yet.
I just thought it was odd that it kept boot, and wanted to get opinions.

That sounds like your Fastboot is checked. Menu>Settings>Power and look at the fastboot option at the bottom, if it's checked your fastboot is on. It doesn't completely shut your phone off. The battery pull wiill definitely shut the phone down.

Yep. And thank you.
Said I was a newb, appreciate the replies.
Always grateful to learn something. I've read a lot lately but nothing on fast boot.

WTF, I read that people originally put down a deposit on the 3VO before it was released. Then HTC announced that the bootloader was going to be locked, so people withdrew their deposits; HTC stock fell. Then HTC comes back and states that they will have the bootloader unlocked, then people came back; HTC stock went back up. Now that I have a 3VO, mine is saying that my S-ON. WTF is up with that, it should be off, per HTC's statement.
I have a question though. Everyone is saying that if I root my phone that I will lose warranty, even if I have the damage/lost plan. Can't I go back to the previous settings; unrooted?

From the words of HTC
they will have the bootloader for the 3D unlocked by august or september
but the developers are close to cracking it without HTCs help
(they already have temp root)
Yes
If you are rooted you can revert back to the
stock software and still be covered by warranty

Then why are users still stating downsides? If you can revert back, then there are no downsides, right?
Just to confirm, we still can't root the 3VO yet?

Because it's not that easy to unroot. My advice is if you want root, make sure that you know what you are doing and that you know the consequences.

I have to admit that is something that I do not totally understand. It is my understanding that the worse that someone can do is brick their phone, and that is what I do not completely understand. If one were to brick their phone, why couldn't they just revert back to factory settings. If something were to change in the BIOS, why couldn't the user just wipe the 2nd hand software, and place factory back in it's place. At one point in time, the hardware didn't posses any software.

It is actually really hard to brick your phone if you read instructions and follow step by step. But, if the phone is bricked, you can't do anything to salvage it. Being bricked means you can't do anything at all. You wouldn't be able to "revert to factory settings" if it is bricked. There is so much information out there to troubleshoot any problems that come up. But, if you don't read and just try and do something you don't know what you are doing, you could mess it up real bad.
