[Update: HTC Unlocks bootloaders] Dark News For E3D - Locked Bootloader

Update: HTC has announced they will unlock their bootloaders
    https://www.facebook.com/HTC/posts/10150307320018084

In a bit of sad news, Android Police is confirming that the Evo 3D will ship with a locked bootloader. (For those that don't know, this means that every time the Evo 3D boots, it checks the encrypted signature of the bootloader against an internally stored value. If these values don't match, the phone won't boot.)

An image signed with 256 bit encryption will make the installation of custom ROMs and builds difficult, but not impossible. That level of encryption is close to impossible to crack, but there are always work-arounds.

While I'm not happy with HTC for this decision, I have faith in the dev community to push through some great customization. It's still too early to call this one.

Yeah, those devs at XDA are brilliant. They'll probably figure something out!

It looks like HTC may hopefully reconsider !

    QUOTE : ENGADGET

We've got some good news and some bad news. Let's do the bad news first: much like the Sensation, Thunderbolt, and Incredible S, Android Police has confirmed that the upcoming HTC EVO 3D will also be sporting a locked down bootloader of similar fashion, meaning custom ROM modders will have a hard time glamming up said phone. Not that anyone should be surprised by this finding though, given the sad trend. That said, there is still hope: earlier today, HTC announced on Facebook that it's "reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders" -- looks like someone's pulled a page out of Sony Ericsson's good book. If all goes well, we'll just have to wait and see whether HTC will beat Motorola to making their fans smile again.

It's legit. It came from their Facebook page, the CEO, Peter Chou:

Yep, it just seems too good to be true! Congrats guys, I can't help but think those of you who wrote, posted, and signed petitions helped to get this accomplished. Things are looking up for the E3D.
