    Internet Service slowed by smartphones

    Hello,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I recently got new service with Sprint. My son and I got the Evo 3D phones while my wife and daughter opted for a different smartphone.

    Here's my questions/concerns.

I have high speed cable internet rated at 20-30Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up. For some reason when all of us have our phones connected to my home internet wireless through my router, it brings my house internet speeds to a crawl. My speeds literally go from over 20Mbps to 3-5Mbps.

Is it normal for Smartphones to use so much bandwidth and be such HUGE internet hogs?

Is there something I can do to our phones other than shutting off their Wireless Network connection all the time?

I would use a tool like Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to check exactly what is happening. Run the test first without connecting the phones, then run it again with the phones. See how downloading a big file, or watching youtube in HD affects the speed. I don't see how the phones would cause the speed to go down that much, but the test would tell.

Looks like the smartphones ARE slowing my speeds a little, but not as drastic as I previously thought. It appears my INET speeds are degrading at about the same time each day. Usually between 4PM and 9PM. I'm starting to think my neighbor may be streaming some bandwidth hogging stuff from the Internet.

I'll be putting a call into my ISP to find out why my INET speeds are consistently going from over 20Mbps speeds to literally under 3Mbps speeds each day at the same time.

    Thanks for your response.

By they way, I was a "hater" of smart phones and actually still had a good 'ole clam phone prior to getting this new Evo3D phone and I have to say, I really like it a lot!
